One of the most well-kept secrets to healthy, thriving plants is rainwater — yes, straight from the sky.
Tap water often contains fluoride, chlorine, and other chemicals that can be harsh on plants over time. Rainwater, on the other hand, is softer, more natural, and closer to what plants receive in nature.
Why Rainwater Works So Well
We all know plants need carbon dioxide — but did you know they also need oxygen? (Photosynthesis… remember the red bean project in school?)
Rainwater naturally contains more oxygen than tap water, which allows plant roots to breathe more efficiently. When slightly acidic rainwater reaches the soil, it also helps release essential micronutrients that support healthy growth.
In short: rainwater helps plants absorb what they need more easily.
Collecting & Storing Rainwater
Collecting rainwater doesn’t have to be complicated, but proper storage is important.
I’ve personally seen my grandmother add a small amount of organic coconut oil to her rainwater. The oil creates a barrier at the surface where larvae can’t survive. While I haven’t tested this myself, it’s a traditional method that’s been passed down through generations.
Extra Tips for Clean Rainwater
Collecting rainwater doesn’t have to be fancy — it just has to be intentional.
Your Plants Will Thank You
Rainwater is one of the easiest, most natural ways to give your plants what they love. Once you start using it, you’ll likely notice healthier leaves, stronger growth, and happier plants overall.
Give it a try — I promise, your plants will love you for it 🌱
