Plants Vs Friends

Oh no… not a bug!! 🐛

Look — the reality is insects love plants. They live in them, eat them, and sometimes even breed in them. While some insects are actually beneficial, others can be a real pain to deal with. In this post, we’ll talk about which insects are the good guys, which ones are the not-so-friendly, and how to both treat and prevent pest issues.

Friends vs. Foes: Know the Difference

Not all bugs are bad! Some insects are actually helpful to plants and play an important role in nature.

🌿 The Good Guys

These are typically predatory insects or pollinators.

  • Predatory insects feed on plant-eating pests and help keep infestations under control.
Examples include ladybugs, praying mantises, and lacewings.

  • Pollinators help plants reproduce by transferring pollen.
These include bees, moths, and of course, butterflies.

😬 The Not-So-Friendly Bugs

These insects can damage plants and spread quickly if not treated:

  • Spider mites

  • Mealybugs

  • Fungus gnats (arguably some of the most annoying insects on Earth)

Knowing which bugs are helpful and which are pests is key to keeping your plants healthy.

Be Proactive: Prevention Is Everything

The best way to prevent pest problems indoors is to keep your plant leaves clean.

Gently wiping leaves with a soft terry cloth once or twice a month helps remove dust, larvae, and eggs before they become a bigger issue. Clean leaves also allow plants to photosynthesize more efficiently — win-win!

What to Do If You Find Bugs

First — don’t panic. Bugs happen, and it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong.

Step 1: Isolate the plant

Move the affected plant away from your others immediately. This helps prevent pests from spreading.

Step 2: Treat the plant

Spray the plant with your favorite natural pest control (Root Juice is definitely our favorite 😉). Be sure to remove any visible insects by hand.

If the infestation is more severe, you may also:

  • Water the plant with a diluted insect control solution to target pests living in the soil

  • Prune heavily infested leaves

  • In extreme cases, remove the plant from its soil and repot it in fresh, sterile soil

Proper Cleaning Technique Matters

When cleaning or treating leaves:

  • Hold the leaf or stem with one hand

  • Gently wipe with the other

Many houseplants have thin, delicate leaves, and supporting them while cleaning helps prevent tearing or damage.

DIY Pest Control Solutions

There are effective pest treatments you can make using common household items.

One simple solution:

  • 1 tablespoon of mild soap

  • 1 gallon of water

Shake well and spray on both the leaves and soil.

Another option:

  • Rubbing alcohol diluted with water, which can be helpful for pests like mealybugs.

If you’d rather not mix your own solutions, our organic leaf shine and pest control spray, Root Juice, is available in our online shop and mobile store.

Need Help Identifying a Bug?

If you’re unsure what you’re dealing with, feel free to email us a clear photo, and we’ll do our best to help identify the insect and recommend treatment options.

A Final Reminder

Having pests does not mean you failed as a plant parent. Most infestations can be treated, and there’s usually no need to get rid of your plant.

Plants and insects are both part of nature — learning how to coexist and stay proactive is the best defense. And remember, we’re always here to help. 🌱
