Beginners Welcome
So, you’re ready to explore the world of plants! Maybe you’ve had your eye on a plant or two, or perhaps you’ve received a planty gift and thought, okay… I guess this is happening. Either way — welcome! Deciding to become a plant parent is an excellent choice.
Before bringing a plant home, the first step is choosing the right one for you. There are a few important questions to ask yourself before committing.
How much time do you have to care for your plant?
Some plants thrive on a little neglect (yes, really!). These include favorites like Pothos, Lucky Bamboo (both can grow in soil or water), Sansevieria (also known as Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue), and Zamioculcas zamiifolia (the ZZ Plant), just to name a few.
On the other hand, some plants love being the center of attention — think Peace Lilies and the infamous Fiddle Leaf Fig. While a few plants can be a bit finicky, don’t let that intimidate you! With the right care instructions and a suitable environment, even beginners can keep plants healthy and thriving.
How much light will your plant receive?
One of the biggest misconceptions about plants is that they all need tons of sunlight. In rainforests, trees can be so dense that sunlight barely reaches the plants below — and many plants have adapted beautifully to low-light conditions.
Some popular low-light plants include Peace Lilies, certain ferns, Calatheas, and of course our favorite trio: Pothos, Snake Plants, and ZZ Plants. There are also plenty of plants that thrive in bright light — the key is understanding placement and light intensity.
And if your space doesn’t get much natural light? No worries. Grow lights and plant lamps are affordable and effective ways to give your plants what they need.
Do you have pets or small children?
This is probably the most important question of all.
Some plants can be toxic if ingested. Plants such as Philodendrons, Dieffenbachias, and Rubber Trees may cause nausea, swelling, itching, rashes, and in extreme cases, serious harm. Knowing whether a plant is toxic is essential before bringing it into your home.
That said, having pets or children doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy plants. Proper placement — keeping plants out of reach — is a great preventative step. The most important thing is simply being informed and intentional about the plants you choose.

Once you’ve made your selection, remember: plants are therapeutic, but they can feel overwhelming at first. Take your time, learn as you go, and have fun with it. You will make mistakes — and yes, you may even lose a plant or two (trust me, I’ve lost my fair share!). The key is learning from it and adjusting moving forward.
After all, we’re all growing together. 🌱
